"Ocean-Powered" Marine Growth Control Technology


Companies working in the harsh marine environment – offshore oil companies, port and harbor authorities as well as owners and operators of other maritime installations – are well aware of the need to control marine growth control on offshore installations.

Marine Growth Control is VITAL on new structures for the following reasons:

  • To reduce design allowances for growth thickness and roughness;
  • To reduce static, dynamic and hydrodynamic loading and increase RSR and fatigue life; and
  • To reduce jacket weight, fabrication and installation costs

Since 1990, IEV has developed and implemented a unique patented technology which utilizes natural ocean forces to remove and permanently prevent settlement of marine organisms on submerged structures. This technology eliminates the need for periodic cleaning and substantially reduces cleaning costs.



IEV’s marine growth control philosophy focuses on breaking down the marine colonization process. This is achieved by preventing the formation of microbial slime or microfouling which is the precondition for macrofouling growth on offshore structures. By preventing microfouling, later groups of hard-fouling organisms; such as, barnacles, oysters and tubeworms, together with soft-fouling organisms; such as, anemones, hydroids and sponges, are denied an environment of nutrients to breed.

IEV’s unique product – the Marine Growth Preventer (“MGP”) – is powered solely by natural forces; such as, ocean waves, swells, tides and currents. Thus, the endless and free energy of nature and technology work effectively together to maintain protected structures free of all marine fouling.



Until now, over 17,000 of IEV’s MGP have been applied on new offshore installations worldwide.

The technology has been incorporated into the design of new jackets by a large number of operators to reduce wave and current loadings which enables lighter and more cost efficient structures to be fabricated.

New Field Development

Application of MGP on new field developments allows structures to be designed and operated at reduced growth levels. This generates substantial decrease in static, dynamic and hydrodynamic loadings. As a result; fabrication, installation and abandonment costs can be substantially reduced.

Structures designed with adequate growth thicknesses also benefit from the “zero-growth” profile offered by the installation of MGP as both their structural capacity and fatigue life are greatly enhanced. This would allow structures to carry additional loads and their service life to be extended.

Installation of products on newly built jackets can be carried out safely by riggers/scaffolders or rope access technicians.

Jetties & Wharves

IEV’s MGP are also applied to jetties and wharves to:

  • reduce corrosion attack;
  • enhance structural integrity; and
  • enable conditions of structures to be easily inspected without prior removal of growth

Specific Applications

MGP can also be employed to maintain a ‘zero-growth’ profile for;

  • visual inspection of risers, caissons and conductors; and
  • reduction of weight on mooring ropes / chains and flexible flowlines

The manufacturing process in producing the MGP conforms to ISO 9001:2008 requirements.
